As we are all in a mad rush to finish off for the year, we will soon be in that mad rush again to start next year.
Being the “silly season”, who knows what, can go wrong. From flight delays and cancellations, to lost luggage, to personal injuries.
It is for these reasons that travel insurance is a must.
This comes in 2 general forms – leisure and business travel insurance.
Leisure travel is for individuals and their travelling companions / family. There are different areas of cover which can be selected:
These range from Medical expenses / evacuations, to additional specified items / valuables.
From removal of excess option to additional rental vehicle excess cover and hazardous activities / sports, just to name a few.
The premium and cover is dependant on the region travelled to, as well as if there are any pre-existing medical conditions.
Policies can be purchased for a single trip or an annual multi-trip.
Business travel extends to directors, CEO’s, CFO’s,
COO’s and company secretaries.
Some policies include interstate travel and not only overseas travel.
Some include their travelling companions / family.
The premium and cover is dependant on the region travelled to, number of trips per annum and if there are any pre-existing medical conditions.
So what about free travel insurance on my credit card?
Well the question is who gives you something for nothing?
Most of these covers are a basic one size fits all approach. One should rather be able to select the desired level of cover with the applicable excess, in accordance with the trip being taken.
Here’s a classic case study of free travel insurance with some credit cards:
A consumer had a travel insurance claim rejected on the basis that the deposit for the trip was paid for in cash and not on the credit card. Just a technicality the insurer says but it still leaves the client with a rejected claim and most of all - out of pocket.
If you are travelling with this credit card insurance, we recommend that the policy wording be obtained from the credit card provider, in order to ascertain the following:
- What am I covered for?
- How much cover ($ value) does the cover provide in each circumstance?
- Is there an excess and how much is it?
- Is my family covered under the same policy?
- Am I covered for pre-existing medical conditions?
- What is the age limit under the policy for people travelling
- Does it include cover for acts of terrorism
If you haven’t reviewed your travel leisure travel insurance or updated your Business travel insurance, now is the time to do so.
Top cover is complete cover which is your peace of mind away from home.
